Summary

British School Dhahran (BSD) is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Instructional Assistant who possesses a genuine passion for supporting pupils across all areas of the Primary curriculum. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of inspiring pupils to become conscientious, compassionate thinkers and engaged global citizens. Position Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the safety and security of children and young people (child protection).
  • Assist the teacher in the delivery of lessons in accordance with the goals and objectives of a clearly defined and documented curriculum for students.
  • Organise classrooms, work centres and activity areas.
  • Maintain instructional supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrate creativity.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment for students at all times.
  • Supervise students during lunch and other break times.
  • Respond appropriately to the range of individuals needs and abilities within the class.
  • From time to time, may be asked to assist with daily hygiene routines.
  • Be fluent in English, oral and written.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changes with regards to distance learning if necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Headteacher, Head of Department and Principal.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Education

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field of study (Education or Subject Specialism preferred).

Certifications

Relevant Instructional Assistant certifications, such as NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, are highly desirable.

Curriculum

Comprehensive understanding of the English National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) frameworks.

Technology

Proficiency in educational technology, specifically Seesaw and Google Workspace for Education.

Pedagogy

Knowledge of Assessment for Learning (AfL), inquiry-based learning, and conceptual-based mathematics (e.g., White Rose Maths).

Experience and Skills 

The ideal candidate will bring experience from a British international school or a UK-based educational setting. Specific expertise in phonics programs (such as Jolly Phonics)is highly valued. Candidates should have a proven ability to work in close partnership with teachers to establish an appropriate child-centred learning environment and experience supporting pupils with diverse learning needs, including English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Essential skills for this position include a positive and compassionate outlook, open-mindedness, and the flexibility required for a fast-paced school environment. A proactive approach and the ability to take initiative are crucial for supporting classroom flow. Additionally, the candidate must possess strong organisational skills, effective time management, and the creativity and enthusiasm necessary to maintain excellence in education. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are mandatory.
